Turns out you can double-click and right-click the handle at the bottom of the Column view to tweak how columns behave.
I use column view almost exclusively. While I have long known about double-clicking the column handle to resize it to width, it never occurred to me to right click to reveal more choices. It’s a “Big Duh” wrapped in a “Ah Ha” burrito for me.
