I agree that the 3G is enough and I planned to do the same. Until my daughter insisted that she had to replace her dying Palm Centro and it was time for her to get an iPhone. So we all upgraded - five in total.
And I sold my iPhone 3G 16 GB on eBay for $273! I have 3 8 gig models yet to sell, but for me, the upgrade was a cash positive move. We balance our bill by having the other 4 drop to the lowest data plans. I stuck with the unlimited plan, not so much for my current usage, but for the future.
